Holiday Events Update

Hello fabulous families,

Thank you to everyone who came out last night for our 5th grade Sweet Karols. I was VERY proud of our class!

With the snow day, our schedule was thrown a bit, so I wanted to provide a quick update:

·       Monday is the grade-level winter celebration. If you have not had an opportunity to sign up for anything, please consider donating YOUR TIME! We are in need of crayon shavers. One of the ornaments that the students make requires crayon shavings. It is difficult and slightly dangerous for the students to shave their own crayons; therefore, we have asked for parents to volunteer to shave the crayons. We send home baggies of crayons to be shaved, and the shavings simply need to be returned by Friday. Please sign up if you are able! http://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050f48ada629a57-winter

·       Don’t forget to send in $5 for Monday’s lunch! As of yesterday, I had only received $15 for our class.

Thank you to all of you for your support of our holiday events. I know we’ve asked A LOT of you over the past month. You are SO APPRECIATED!!!

Music Update from Mrs. Mungin

Hello Parents,
It is with excitement that I let you know that we have started our Recorder Karate unit.  This is an ongoing until the end of 2017.  All students in 4th and 5th grades are required to play the recorder.  By now you should have all signed and returned a Recorder Karate letter with a rubric and objectives outlined for the unit.  Students are asked to practice six days for 15 minutes.  This is how your child’s grade will be determined for this nine weeks.  Failure to turn in practice logs and test recorder songs will result in a failing grade.  Therefore, your child always has homework which are practicing their Recorder Karate songs.

Please help me assist your child with their music playing.  I know as a team the both of us can help your child achieve a level of playing that they will be very happy with.

If you have questions, first please refer to parent letter in your child’s music folder and then email me if your question is not addressed in the letter.
Thanks

Conference Week

Parents,

It's that time of year! I am so excited to invite you into our classroom for our Fall conference. Please sign up for an available conference time. Students are REQUIRED to attend the conference, as they will facilitate the discussion. School will be dismissed at 12:20 for the entire week of conferences. Please plan accordingly.

Conferences will last TWENTY MINUTES each. We must remain on schedule out of respect for everyone's time. Because your child will facilitate, it's essential that we give him or her our undivided attention. For this reason, I ask that you please make any necessary arrangements for any other children.

Please click the link below to sign up for a conference time.

I look forward to seeing all of you at conferences!

Sincerely,

Ms. Kraftschik

Student Council Representatives

Today, students were able to run for Student Council.  Each class in 3rd-5th grade has two student council representatives.  Students prepared and gave speech's to their classmates explaining why they would be the best candidate for student council.  My favorite items that were mentioned include helping the school organize fundraisers, help others to be caring, and help to end bullying.  Students were all able to vote for two representatives, and the tally is in. It was a close race, but we have our two student council representatives.  Please help in congratulating the following two students, who go above and beyond to be role models on a daily basis in our classroom.

Late Work and Retake Policy

Many students have not been completing their work in class.  Graded work is coming home today, and many of their test scores are directly related to their classwork.  If student are not turning work in, or have late work, they are to complete it over the weekend.  Please remember that my request to retake and late work policies are as follows:

Request to Retest: students may retake a test with a grade of 70% or lower.  Students must fill out the “requests to retest” sheet and return by the following Monday after the grade is received.  Students will have the remainder of the week to study and the retest will be on Friday.  The retest may be the same test, but it is highly unlikely.  Students may not retake classwork assignment or redo projects.

Late Work: Each Friday, missing assignments from the week will be written on a list and posted in the back of the room by our turn in bin.  Student’s may ask for 1 additional copy if needed, but the assignment must be turned in by the following Tuesday to receive credit with no penalty.  After Tuesday if the assignment is not turned in, the missing assignment will result in a 0% in the gradebook and the assignment cannot be retaken or turned in at a later date.

In 5th grade, students must be more independent and responsible for their late work.  We have things in the classroom to help them with their late work, and being able to track what they are turning in.

Again, please do not forget to submit your order for books, I will place the orders on Wednesday, September 6th. Have a wonderful labor day weekend.

Scholastic Book Club Extension

I have extended the deadline to order books until Wednesday, 9/6/2017.  I have received a few emails about some of the codes not working so I wanted to clarify.  Once you are on the page, you can either search by code, or search by book name.  Here are the updated codes, book titles, and authors.  It is ESSENTIAL that ALL students have one copy of each of the books.  These titles will be used in  most 5th grade classes this year. If you are having a hard time purchasing the books, please let me know, and we can work together to come up with a solution.

  1. Holes-Louis Sachar-#039258
  2. The Witches-Roald Dahl-#84V2
  3. Out of the Dust-Karen Hesse-#058597
  4. The One and Only Ivan-Katherine Applegate-#53Y1
  5. Love the Dog-Sharon Creech-#058647
  6. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone-J.K. Rowling-#039134
  7. Three Times Lucky-Shelia Turnage-#73Y2
If you search the title of the book, these should be the first ones that appear.  Thank you so much for all of your help, support, and assistance in making this year fun, and engaging for our students.
